Board Games for Family Night and Parties

  • Facebook
  • Twitter

When you have company over or family night, playing games is a great form of entertainment! Here are a few of our favorites.

Our Favorite Board Games for Family Night!

Whenever we have friends over, it’s a given rule in our household that board games are a must. I love to play board games and don’t get to play them nearly enough. My husband groans when I head towards the game closet… he likes to play card games and strategy games. Games like Scrabble, Pictionary, etc. aren’t his style. Because of that, our guests are the ones who have to humor me as I dust off my underused games.

For our Christmas dinner party, I have a couple of games in mind. I was thinking that we’d play some of our favorite family board games –  Apples to Apples or Catch Phrase. Beyond Balderdash is another favorite that might be a possibility for that night.

What do you think? What are some of your favorite board games to play with friends and family? What games tend to bring out the most laughs and fun in the people you play them with? I’m completely open to suggestions and would love to hear what some of your favorites are. Share your favorite board game recommendations in the comment section below. Thanks in advance!

I’m old-school… I like games like Trivial Pursuit, dominoes and Scrabble. Fun stuff!

    I like Taboo.
But no one will ever play that one with me…so maybe I’m the only one.
Did you decide on your centerpiece yet?

    Amy –
I love Taboo. We play that every Christmas with my husband’s family. Let me rephrase that… the girls play that every year at Christmas. The guys don’t want anything to do with it!

As far as a centerpiece goes…
Don’t you dare point me in the direction of another great site like you did the other day! I’ve already spent enough money… I think the centerpiece will be a DIY idea. I’m going to see what I can scrounge up now.

We have some games that are pretty fun. One is called Word Thief. You play with letter cards, and lay words down for points. Your opponents can steal your words to make new words.

Another one that is exceptional is called Acronymity. You move your piece around the board and all you need to do is figure out the acronym listed on the card. We all use the acronym ‘URL’ but do we really KNOW what it means? How about DVD? NASCAR? NHRA?

Another great game is Blokus. Four people try to lay down colored tile on a board and block their opponents out.

Know the card game Demon? A riot! Ever play Scrabble using only names and proper nouns or action verbs? MUCH harder than you think!
