I want to cover a couple of things with this post. First of all, I was thrilled to be contacted a couple of weeks ago to see if I would be interested in having Dine & Dish be the blog of the day for July 1st on the Sony Pictures site for the movie Julie & Julia. Of course, I was thrilled to be a mini-part of what I can only assume is going to be a must see film for all of us in the food blogging community. Make sure to visit the movie site each day to see what other blogs were hand picked to be the Julie & Julia blog of the day!
For those of you who are not familiar with Julie & Julia, it is a movie based on a book based on a blog by Julie Powell. Julie decided one day when she was trying to find some great purpose in her life, to spend 365 days devoted to making each recipe out of the famed Julia Child cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Volume 1. Just as Julia Child paved the way for TV chefs today, Julie Powell paved the way for all of us food bloggers out here. Her blog was honestly one of the first times I had heard about the world of food blogging.
My friend Julie Lackey gave me the book Julie & Julia and I loved it and related so much to it! I can only imagine that I will be just as entertained by the movie (starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams).
Now, for the next part of this post. Being a mom of four kids makes it very difficult to get out to see movies at the theatre. A couple of years ago, some friends and I started a group called Chicks & Flicks.Chicks & Flicks is a mixed group of friends who get together about every 6 weeks to watch a movie in the theatre. We’ve seen “chick flicks” and we have watched movies our husbands would have enoyed as much, if not more, than us. If we were all to be there at one time, there would be about 15 of us in attendance. On most occassions, we have between 6-10 women. It is a great time, no pressure, no preparation needed kind of night. Our group was recently written about in our local Shawnee Magazine. To read about how you can start your own Chicks & Flicks movie group, check out the article. I shared a lot of great tips to getting your movie group started! I think it would be a great idea to have Julie & Julia be your first movie together. You can bet my group will be heading to the theatres on August 7th to check out Julie & Julia, the movie!

Love your blog – I am in Paris at Le Cordon Bleu right now! Julie Powell was here at the school last week, she was really nice even though they crammed her in the hottest little corner of the building to sign books. I can’t wait for the movie – hits Paris in August.

I started a group last fall called FriDAY flicks, and we are a group of moms who go see a movie the first Friday of the month, at lunch time (those of us who work outside the home call it a long lunch meeting)! The guilt and pain we feel about sneaking out in the middle of the day to see a movie is mitigated by the fact that we get to spend some quality girl-time together. Now, we have seen a few loser movies, but most have been fun and a great break in the middle of busy schedules.

I saw the movie yesturday, and LOVED it. Meryl Streep was great as Julia, as she is in sooo many of her roles. I just looked to see the blog, to see the reality of it. I was so shocked to find it, why, i don’t know. But it was cool to find. Im 16, so I’m not one who grew up with the actual show. I looked it up on youtube though, and in my opinion, Meryl did a great job as her, as I said in the beginning. I couldn’t stop smiling at Meryl, she kept putting me in a good mood. I loved how both of them worked so hard and kept trying to look on the bright side. I can’t help but wonder though, what would happen if the real Julia had seen this movie? Would she dislike it like she disliked the blog Julie made, or would she enjoy it. I guess the world will never know. XD

Dad and I watched the Meryl Streep film, Julie and Julia which is about a contemporary girl in Queens, NY who writes a blog about Cooking every recipe in the Julia Child cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking.
Since Dad has Alzheimer’s, it’s hard to find a movie that Dad and I can both enjoy, so this was a great mix of 1920s Paris and today’s modern movie.
Well, I became inspired to cook a chicken. I know how silly that sounds when you can buy a $4.99 rotisserie chicken at any grocery store, but I know how much my Dad loves chicken and wanted to make a real one, from scratch.
So I baked and basted until the most beautiful golden bird emerged from my oven. I felt a little Julia Child-ish myself.
I set the table, got Dad seated with a nice glass of tea and went back to the kitchen to carve the perfectly rested masterpiece.
As I rounded the corner, I caught sight of our beloved dog, Claire with my chicken in her mouth!
In seconds, my chicken was gone, in twenty delicious pieces on the carpet of my living room.
So Dad and I had peanut butter sandwiches for dinner. He even commented a few times how delicious it was and how much he loved peanut butter and jelly.
Sorry Julia.
