Dishing Up Confessions

I’m feeling a bit of a wild hair tonight and am in the mood to get some things off my chest. I have some confessions to make… some may shock you, some, not so much. Sit back, grab a beverage, and let me share with you some of my deepest secrets.

  • Let’s just get the mother of confessions out of the way here. I became Catholic in the Spring of 1998. During that time we had to make our first confession. My experience was not a pleasant one… face to face with the priest and people waiting to give their confessions just a few short feet away, most definitely within earshot. (Oh – and the people before more… juicy stuff, I tell ya’. It was like an episode of Days of Our Lives). I was not impressed and have yet to go back to confession.  If you have any knowledge of the Catholic faith, you will understand how unacceptable this is. Hopefully blogging confessions count?
  • I love Little Debbie snack cakes. There… I said it (whew!). I crave them once a month (imagine that) and with their $1.19 price tag for an entire box, who can resist a Little Debbie? My favorite kinds are the Oatmeal Cream Pies, Swiss Cake Rolls and Nutty Bars.
  • When I was middle school aged, my parents had a sheet of money hanging on the wall of our study. They got it at the United States Treasury when they visited Washington DC. I took it off the wall, cut it up, and used it to buy something. I’m not sure what I bought with it… probably some Little Debbie’s.
  • I like to squeeze things. Give me a baby, a puppy, a hamster, a tomato and my first instinct is to squeeze it. This is an inherited trait, I’m sure, because my niece Crystal and I both do this. We laugh when we catch each other in these situations because you can see it in our faces…especially in our gritted teeth… that we have the urge to squeeze whatever we are holding.
  • This confession may cause the in-law side of my family to disown me (even more then the not going to confession confession will)… I don’t love ice cream. I have sensitive teeth and hate being cold. Ice cream makes my teeth hurt and it makes me cold. It is a good thing I don’t love ice cream because my husband is an ice cream junkie, so there is always that temptation around. Luckily,  I can resist ice cream pretty easily. I do love milkshakes and… I probably shouldn’t say this outloud… but I could dump the pre-frozen cream/sugar/vanilla mixture into a cup and drink it without doing the whole ice cream freezer thing. I love ice cream “juice”.

One thing that probably does not need to be confessed because you have already figured this out if you are a reader of any length of time… I am not the most patient person. I am not a “stick the dough in the freezer and let it sit overnight” kind of girl. I can’t stand that. When I want something, I want it now. Today, when I made ice cream for my husband, I took it out of the ice cream maker after its designated time, added the fudge and salted caramel, then put it in the deep freeze to really firm up for what should have been a couple of strong hours. After about thirty minutes, I was tired of waiting and pulled it out. It looked fine at the moment, but things went south when I dipped some into a glass for my “food photo session”. Within minutes, the ice cream had lost its shape and looked like a big glass of “ice cream juice”. Melted or frozen solid, it all tastes the same, right?

Do you have time for one last confession? After the photo shoot, I licked the dripping ice cream off the side of the glass. Really, Miss/Mr Hoity Toity… don’t go telling me you wouldn’t do the same thing. Deny it and it could be confession time for all of us.

Basic Vanilla Ice Cream

BASIC VANILLA
2 eggs
3/4 cup sugar
2 cups heavy cream
1 cup milk
2 teaspoon vanilla

Whisk the eggs in a mixing bowl
until light and fluffy.

Whisk in the sugar, a little at a time
then continue whisking until completely blended.

Pour in the cream, milk,
and vanilla and whisk to blend.

Transfer the mixture to an ice cream maker
Freeze according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

**I added chopped chocolate covered peanuts to my ice cream maker during the last 10 minutes of the cycle. When I removed the ice cream from the maker, I added some salted caramel (store bought ice cream caramel in a jar with sprinkled Kosher salt mixed in) and some hot fudge. **

    Kristen, you are too funny! I’ve been a Catholic since 1995 and haven’t ever been to confession! And yes, I would lick the glass, too!

    I haven’t been to confession since I had to (confirmation 20 or so years ago – too lazy to do the math). Of course, that didn’t stop me from partaking of communion a few times in between then and now.

    I can not believe you cut up a framed sheet of money. What whopper of a lie did you tell to cover your butt with that one? LOL

    Your ice cream sounds delicious (and similar to my new favorite at Hagan Daz). I sometimes think patience is over-rated.

    A week ago, they were sampling Vanilla Bean Ice Cream at our nearby Fresh and Easy Supermarket. Golly! The ice cream was so good with little bits of vanilla beans mixed in that I kept coming back to the sampling counter. I think I ate a half-gallon’s worth of those little 1oz cups!

    sigh, I’ll meet your confessions…

    When Little Debbie changed their recipe a few years ago to remove transfats, I was SO incredibly disappointed by the first swiss cake rolls I had that I wrote the company to complain. And, even though they were very responsive & even refunded my dollars (I had to test 2 boxes to be sure!), I’ve not eaten swiss cake rolls since… but I haven’t given up the debbies!

    Confession: I’m a sucker for chocolate cake w/ chocolate icing. I will blow my healthy choices when presented with this temptation. I don’t care if it’s a Zinger.

    Something about sinking my teeth into a soft moist chocolate cake and getting that gooey icing all over them *content sigh* puts my soul a ease. Everything is right in the World. *licks lips*

    Great now I’ve done it.

    You crack me up Kristen! I don’t remember when I was last at confession, I always found it awkward. Anyhoo, I read somewhere that ice cream actually tastes better when it’s starting to melt, something to do with our taste buds not being able to taste really cold food. So that glass there full of melting ice cream, it looks delicious to me!

    I loved this post. I can’t believe people could hear you during confession. That would make it difficult for me too. Um, though I’m about to confess something on your blog and people will read it, well, you will, so…

    I am a vicious barking dog when people come to the door trying to sell something. Recently there have been a rash of gas salespeople and their tricky tactics infuriate me. One time I was so mean to one of the guys I cried afterwords. I felt horrible!

    Kristen, I am not a glass licker – cut your tongue on a broken rim once and you’ll be cured of that habit – but I would have licked the dasher and the spatula and probably my fingers.

    And my Little Debbie of choice is the strawberry shortcake roll, which is an evilly delicious little thing that has some strange power over me that I am unable to resist. I am not ashamed! Okay, I’m a little ashamed.

    I love your confessions! How very fascinating and what an interesting way to get to know you. My instinct is always to bite. I love crunchy things. I love the food photo and seeing the ice cream spilling and melting in all its glory. I gather the 2 tsp in this recipe is for the vanilla extract?

    I remember my first Confession–I was little, I can’t remember how old I was, but I remember feeling peeved because I felt I honestly didn’t have anything to confess! I was a really good girl! I made up something so the priest wouldn’t feel bad; maybe I should confess that??? : )
    I secretly love Little Debbie Swiss Cake Rolls, too! Shhh! It’ll be our secret!
    And, similar to your squeeziness, I like to touch fabric, paper, ceramics, etc. at stores. I love fabric and stationery stores that feed this habit of mine!
    And I do not deny that I lick my bowls and plates clean as well (not in public, mind you!)!!!
    Whew. I feel better now! 😉
    This is a great post! I think I might steal this and write up a few confessions of my own. : )

    Good night nurse. Should I really confess that when some of our neighbors brought a batch of rice crispie bars to our house as a welcome gift I ate almost all of them by myself?

    Nope I’ll just keep that little doozy to myself.

    Kristen, I was born and raised a Catholic – like millions of people in Brazil – but I don’t follow all the rules, since some of them I don’t truly believe in and/or accept. If I think that I need to confess something, I pray and ask God for forgiveness – directly. It has worked so far. 🙂

    Oh, I just found your blog and this makes me laugh!!!

    I was raised Catholic and after 20 years of skipping confession, I decided to go. I sat in the “waiting area” realizing that I could hear what was being said, and left! One of these days, though…I will go back. I want to know what happened to those great, old-fashioned confessionals!!!

    Loved your post.

    I can’t have Ice Cream (makes my throat so thick).
    But I do love fresh fruit sorbet!

    There is only one who is blameless and can intercede for us, when we confess our sins and that is Jesus Christ.

    God wants to have a personal relationship with us, not have us go through another human.
