Whip up this Banana Pumpkin Breakfast Shake recipe for a great back to school breakfast!
I know, I know… here it is still August and I’m already sharing something pumpkin with you. I promise this isn’t the start of shoving pre-season pumpkin down your throat (there will be plenty of that to come). This Banana Pumpkin Breakfast Shake is, instead, a result of the fact that I still have a zillion and ten cans of pumpkin in my pantry leftover from last year.
So, can we talk breakfast for a moment? Out of my 4 kids, I have one who does not like to eat breakfast. Leah (4) will eat raw bell peppers, tomatoes, goat cheese, salsa verde… just about anything, but she is never hungry at breakfast and doesn’t want breakfast. It’s a challenge because I know, thanks to info from Midwest Dairy, that eating a nutrient-rich breakfast at home or at school boosts brain power and fuels learning.
I’m always trying to create things that interest Leah for breakfast. Breakfast cookies and milk are a favorite. If it seems like dessert, she’s all over eating it (not sure where she gets the love of dessert from… certainly not me!)
We’ve taken to creating calcium and vitamin rich breakfasts that mimic dessert for the kids. Instead of a smoothie, we are calling these breakfast milkshakes. Like a muffin versus cupcake, really it’s all in how you present it!

Banana Pumpkin Breakfast Shake
Ingredients
- 1 banana
- 1 cup pumpkin puree
- 1/2 cup applesauce
- 1/2 cup milk
- 4 Tablespoons honey or 2 Tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
- 2-3 cups ice depending on how thick you want your shake
- whipped cream granola for garnish
Instructions
- Place all ingredients except whipped cream and granola in a blender and blend until smooth.
- Pour into two tall milkshake glasses.
- Top with whipped cream and granola.

I am all over this!! I always have pumpkin on hand all year (I am kind of obsessed) and will surely be making this soon! Dessert for breakfast sounds good to me!

When our oldest daughter was about 4 she wouldn’t eat breakfast either. It was a struggle but somehow she outgrew it. I know all of our three kiddos will love this shake! And the color is so cozy!

It’s amazing how frequently breakfast foods can double as desserts! Good luck getting your little one to eat. Maybe it will get easier as she grows older.
Something cool and topped with cream like this doesn’t make me think of You Know. I can’t say it. Actually, I think I’d like this better than the lattes at Starbucks and I like them quite a bit. Maybe this will be my next smoothie!
This is SO awesome! I’m never hungry super early in the morning but we leave at 7:30, so a shake is perfect. Plus, I have leftover pumpkin in the fridge…. YUM!

I love that you added applesauce to this, Kristen. I bet it takes the overwhelmingly pumpkin edge off the smoothie. My kids would probably go nuts over this combination.

I am definitely ok with breaking out the pumpkin early! I have 2 kids who I have a hard time convincing to eat breakfast. I know it helps them think better at school, but they just won’t eat that early. I’ll have to try the breakfast “milkshake”…I’m sure that will work wonders!!!

I think Leah and I would get along quite well… I’m not a huge breakfast person (though, I do enjoy pancakes). Breakfast cookies and shakes sound perfect to me, though. I’m ready for some pumpkin in my life… Can’t wait to give this a try!
