So, Fat Tuesday is here…and after stepping on the scale this morning I can tell you that Fat Tuesday it is indeed.
Today is the end of the fat food around here for awhile… and by fat food I mean the food I’ve been cooking up in my new deep fryer. You know, the homemade yeast doughnuts, the fish tacos, the beer battered onion rings? Those recipes have been so easy to make since my deep fryer has been out. I’ve now packed my deep fryer away after using the heck out of it for a couple of weeks and am looking forward to some non-frying days to come.
I’m not bidding farewell without sharing one more recipe with you though. I was browsing through Coastal Living magazine the other day when I stumbled across this recipe for Avocado Fries. I had never heard of such a thing and knew I needed to become familiar with these little nibblers as soon as possible. If you think avocados couldn’t get any better, you were wrong. Slicing them into strips, breading them and then putting them in the fryer for a few minutes makes for one fantastic snack.
Of course, avocados are wonderful without taking any of these extra steps, but if you just want to somehow fit avocados into a Fat Tuesday treat, Coastal Living certainly has the way with these delicious Avocado Fries.
Recipe: Avocado Fries (From Coastal Living Magazine)
- Canola oil for frying
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more to taste
- 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
- 1 1/4 cups panko (Japanese breadcrumbs)
- 2 firm-ripe avocados, cut into 1/2-inch wedges
1. Pour oil to depth of 1 1/2 inches in a medium saucepan or Dutch oven. Heat to 375° over medium-high heat.
2. Meanwhile, combine flour and salt in a shallow plate. Put eggs and panko in separate shallow plates. Dip avocado wedges in flour, shaking off excess. Dip in egg, and then dredge in panko to coat.
3. Fry avocado wedges, in batches, 30 to 60 seconds or until golden brown, and drain on paper towels. Place on a baking sheet in a 200° oven to keep warm while frying remaining wedges. Sprinkle with additional salt to taste.

yes yes yes. Just yes. Everything about these. Yes.
Holy Cow! I think I might have to get one of those deep fryers. I’m gonna get in trouble….
Why yes, I DO want to take an already-delicious food and make it even more delectable by frying it! ABSOLUTELY. 😀
Want.
Need.
I love avocados… I love them even more fried!
Okay… one more thing:
Is it bad that I wanna dip those in a mixture of Ranch dressing and horseradish sauce?
Oh, God. I’m in trouble.
Having lived in avocado-rich Hawai’i and fry-happy Georgia, you’d athunk I’d have stumbled onto these before. But nope, new to me. Cheers!
Love these! So much better than french fries!
I’ve never heard of these either! They look & sound delicious 🙂
Oooh, these look so good, Kristen!
I would so love to try these!
Yum! I adore avocados in all forms. I can only imagine how delicious these “healthy” fries are!
Oh, these avocado fries look so good! Hubs and I are really trying to watch what we eat right now, but I might have to make these as our splurge later on in the week!
Hmm, fat tuesday… Now that sounds like an appropriate title for today…lol… Having said that; while I can certainly do without the fried stuff (I do love it though) these avocado fries look totally delicious!
Golly bum! I could really get into these. Yum!
Now there’s a veggie I would have never thought to fry! I’ve seen fried sweet potatoes and fried zucchini, but never avocado.
This is the third time I’ve seen a recipe posted for frying avocado in the past two weeks and it never gets old. I can only imagine…the creaminess of avocado with some salty crispness. Maybe sounded a bit weird cause it’s so unusual but I’m getting used to the idea and it’s sounding less so and more of a ‘have to’ soon!
Deepfried avocado? I gotta say I never would’ve considered it, but you make it sound so yummy.
Okay.. wow! I absolutely love avocado, and fries. Can’t wait to make them “merry” 🙂
These look so good, Kristen. It’s definitely Fat Tuesday around here, too! 🙂
oh my… those wouldn’t last long with me aroud! I didn’t imagine that avocados could get better, but never considered deep frying them! brilliant… but, only for special treats… otherwise it wouldn’t just be Fat Tuesday… but, Fat Wednesday through Monday!lol!
OOOOOOH! Yes, please.
Quick! You still have enough time to whip up a batch of fried penne. Although these avocado fries look like the perfect “last” fried food.
I remember Paula Deen talking about fried avocado and how they’re one of her absolute favorite foods. Now I’ve never fried an avocado but I pictured submerging the whole fruit into oil and thinking it was strange. Duh? Love your recipe. Perfect for Fat Tuesday. I will definitely have to give this a try one day. Love avocados! Thanks for sharing.
Kristen, these avocado fries are so creative and they look mouthwateringly delicious! What a great idea. I would be BAD, oh so bad, with a deep fryer. Good for you showing some restraint, haha! Thanks for sharing. Your photos are just beautiful in this and every post.
I…I…I…can’t imagine anything more crazy delicious than this.
what a great way to serve this veggie I think even my teens may be tempted to try it
Confession: These will be on our dinner table tonight.
I’m serving them next to homemade bacon/cheeseburgers. Yeah… I know.
I. Can’t. Wait.
Combining two divine foods, fries and avocados. Have never heard of this, but it sound wondreful(ly sinful).
These bring tears to my eyes. I want a big batch of these RIGHT NOW.
These look great, and I could think of 10 different sauces over the top of my head that would be fabulous with them! Love.
these look delicious!! I eat my avocados mashed onto buttered toast and salted. Bet they are delicious fried
Okay… I HAD to give a report:
My family has decided that I should be sainted. These avocado fries are mind blowingly good.
Since I had the fryer going, I made these and homemade Jalapeno Poppers.
Burgers, Avocado Fries, Jalapeno Poppers and ice cold beer = GENIUS!
Thank you for posting this recipe! It is a keeper!
I’ve seen this in a few other places, and I love your recipe, I have to try it soon!
Oh my goodness, I had no idea this could be done! They look incredible!
I know it would be too tempting to consume too many if I tried it, so I will just enjoy the beautiful photos of your delicious looking avocado fries.
I am like you. I truly cannot imagine, have never heard of them and want to try them out immediately! They look spectacular – and at 400 healthy fatty bursting with energy calories in every avocado – why not deep fry it.
🙂
Still catching up!!!
(I haven’t posted for 3 weeks – deep in the throws of planning a local slow food event. Great work. Time well spent, but missing my hobby site, my kitchen, cooking and reading your wonderful posts!
I hope to catch up soon!
🙂
Valerie)
Deep fried avocado?? Oh. My. Word. The fact that used panko makes me VERY happy!
I must try these!! YUMMMMM, hugs from Conroe, TX!
I simply must make these. I can imagine the crunchy batter, then sinking through to the tender avocado. Wow! I’d love if you’d consider sharing this in the online Get Grillin’ & summer bbq event I’m hosting (it’s appetizer week right now).
Kristin, these avocado fries look awesome! Thanks so much for entering them into our Get Grillin’ event 🙂
I was just stumbling and I found this recipe! Holy batman that’s incredible!!!!!!!
The only missing is a great dipping sauce. Anyone have any ideas?
I recently had to adopt a Gluten Free diet, but these would be worth the pain and suffering I will feel the next day!!
This blog is great. The recipes are so unusual and delicious. You can be sure when you serve them that your guest have never experienced these recipes before.
if you don’t want the fats from frying, you can put them on a drying rack, then on a cookie try, and bake for 15-20 minutes at 350… SO good!
imuh gonna back away nice and slow like, pretend i didn’t see this . . . and no one gets hurt . . . dang Kristen!!
I just made these, but with a few modifications to make them vegan and healthy. I substituted the eggs for 2 tablespoons of ground flax seed added to 6 tablespoons of boiling water. I baked them, instead of frying, at 350 degrees for 15 mins and then broiled them for 5. They certainly are delicious. Now all i need is a little vegan ranch dressing and they will be perfect.
