Flip Video Camera Giveaway (Recipe: Bacon and Egg Cups)

This post has nothing to do with this recipe for Bacon and Egg cups, which you can find here, but since I’m talking about back to school, I at least wanted to share a delicious and quick breakfast recipe with you!

Those of you who are friends with me on Facebook or follow me on Twitter, may have noticed that I was having just a bit of a meltdown moment yesterday. You see, my kids started back to school today and yesterday morning, when I opened up my fridge to get out the milk, I noticed our “Things to do this summer” list tacked up on the door. I realized as I was glancing through the things on the list that very few items were checked off. Looking through that list of unchecked items really hit me hard.

This summer went by so quickly. I’m going to be 100% honest with you when I say that I have had a very difficult time balancing things this summer. My “real” job with HireBetter, that I am lucky to have, has kept me busy. Freelancing opportunities are continuing to flow in at a great pace. Blog trips, events and activities are in abundance. Things, professionally, are going very well.

The truth of the matter is though that my #1 job is to be the mom of my four kiddos. It has been my goal since my first baby was born to stay at home with them. I’ve been blessed enough to work from home part-time for some pretty amazing companies, but even so, I feel so torn sometimes about how I can balance my professional life and nurturing my goals with my life of being a stay at home mom. Is it possible to be able to do both well, without feeling like one thing or the other getting neglected?

This has been the summer of the professional me, and because of that, I have a horrible amount of mama guilt about not doing enough with my children this summer. Time is slipping away, and sometimes I feel like I need to just shove the whole career thing aside and focus 100% on my family. But would I be happy then? Who knows. Who knows…

Anyway, after my meltdown and some peptalks from some of the most amazing family and friends around, I began to reflect on the summer. I was searching through pictures and found actual proof… proof that my kids and I had a fabulous summer together. We vacationed, we played, we had lazy days, we swam, we visited family… we did so many things that will hopefully be embedded in their minds as part of the great summer of 2010.

I also have more proof. I took some really fun videos of my kids using my Flip Video Camera. Can I just tell you how much I LOVE my Flip Camera? I got it right before Leah was born when I was doing some work with the Chevy Traverse and it is the must have piece of equipment for Moms everywhere.     I’m glad you were able to see how much you DID do with your family this summer. I don’t have kids so I can’t imagine the pressure you’re under to be all things to everyone. And quite honestly that’s not fair to you or any working mom. Be kind to yourself. Try, like the rest of us, to find that delicate balance between work and family/fun.     It’s good to read that you were able to go back and see that it was a summer of fun with your kids, that’s what I love about all the photos I take of mine… totally reminds me that no matter what we may not have done we still had fun together. 🙂

I only have the two kids and I feel like I’m never giving them, my husband or my blogging the attention they each deserve. Working at home is so tough because the line between work and family gets blurred all the time. It’s a continual struggle but, like you said, the proof is in the smiling little faces. Guess I gotta be getting it at least a little right.

    I’m so glad you looked thru your pictures – I almost sent you another note yesterday suggesting that because I thought I remembered reading that you were doing a year-long photo project! And oh boy, mama-guilt – ain’t nothing like mama-guilt – can rip your heart out and stomp all over it, then start all over again. Work, not work? A question only you can answer but I do know this: being fulfilled in some way, how ever tiny, makes one a better mom. And Alice drove that point home this past weekend – she needed something that was just ‘hers’ and she found that in her blog. Does Alice experience mommy-guilt? Haven’t asked her, but I’d bet my last dollar that she does, yet she moves forward because she understands that’s what makes her whole. You’re a gem Kristen, and I’m so happy we’ve met!

    I think it’s time I get into new technology. I am sure a flip camera would be something I would actually carry around with me, so here I am, fingers crossed. And in reference to your guilt: I’ve realized that most children live in the present, the here and now, and that’s why they are always so full of energy. Just look at them when you go to the park, or to the movies. They are just enjoying their time there, they are not worrying about the groceries, dinner, laundry… So don’t worry, Kristen, I am positive they are not double checking the list.

    I have no doubt that your kids had a wonderful summer! The grand summer you had planned, was just that, your plan. Our kids are happy with some of the simplest things (my son loves when I give him a wipe to play with, as opposed to the latest and greatest toy!) with a little spice thrown in on occasion.     I so need one of those phones! Well, need, maybe not but want desperately, yes.

    I am big on if you are financially ABLE to stay home with your kids, then you will never regret it. If you NEED to work to make ends meet, than that is what you have to do and just do what you can. I feel bad for the parents who only need both mom and dad to work so they can afford luxuries in their lives. I have a daycare parent who can’t wait to drop her 3 kids off to me on Monday as they “drive her crazy” all weekend. She has 2 year old twins so I GET it but still I feel bad. I’m rambling aren’t I. I am a firm believer that family needs to come WAYYYYY first here. Well, God first, then family, everything else will fall into place if you strengthen those. 🙂

    Gosh, girl, I know how you feel. Sometimes I look at my 2 kids, and as my heart bursts with love for them, I sigh to my husband that I should quit blogging – and make about four more babies. I love babies!

    oh wow I can thoroughly appreciate your concern about being a stay at home mom, I’m not even married yet and I’m worrying about the future! lol

    My mom was a stay at home mom and I am eternally grateful to her for that.     The first thing I thought of when I saw this post was my kindergarten class. We take lots of pictures, but video catches things in a totally different way. A number of my parents aren’t able to make it to our class during the year since their kids go to school so far from home, so adding video to our (brand new and still very small) blog would be a great way to see their kiddos in action.

As someone whose parents both worked full time, I can tell you from experience that if you love your kids (which you obviously do), all they will remember is how much you loved them and how much fun you had together.     I feel your pain. My youngest child is entering hi senior year in high school. The only thing we got to do this summer is watch him grow more independent. But the great thing is we get to watch them grow and become strong resilient adults.

    I keep staring lovingly at those new, itty bitty tiny video cameras. We bought a really nice one right before my first son was born…11 years ago. That camera was wonderful, but bulky enough that we have to plan when and where to take it along. I’d love to be able to slip a camera in my bag and just run, catching things as they happen.

    What a lovely post. I am not a mother but have helped raise 3 wonderful children since they were infants and can definitely understand where you are coming from. This was the first summer in 8 years, that I felt guilty that we did not have an abundance of “summer fun”. I realized last night that summer is almost over as they start school in two weeks and we only have 3 more days together to fulfill our three lists of fun summer activities. Like you, I feel so guilty. I know for me I want to make the most of it but what I probably do not realize is that the little time we are together, they are actually incredibly overjoyed – I can tell by their smiles in the photos we have taken as well! From what I know of you, you are doing a GREAT job at being a wonderful mother and a professional. Keep up the amazing job!!!

But as a Mom .who has been a stay at home most of the time, sometimes I worked part-time too..hate to tell you ..We Moms always carry the guilt..no matter what we do or not do.     Summer went by so fast! I think I did a pretty good job this year of balancing my son’s time and my time. But, I will admit there was a lot of screen time too. It’s hard not to beat ourselves up so I get where you’re coming from. 😀

    Summer does go by quickly. I am sure that you and your family have had a great summer. Most times it is the small things that children remember. It does not take much to make them happy. And I would love the flip phone.

    This camera would be great! My daughter is in high school, and is very involved…volleyball, softball, marching band…and all of her grandparents live a few hours away, so being able to share videos of what she is up to would be great!!
