Angels among us

I went to my first official Christmas Party last night. It was  a party with the other members of the M.O.M.S board (Ministry of Mother's Sharing). It was a really nice night with some of my best girlfriends. We had great food, really good wine, and funny and enlightening conversations. Half way through the party we did our Dirty Santa ornament exchange. Those are always fun... you can often tell a lot about a person when we play this kind of game. Sometimes the people that you wouldn't think would play dirty, do, and the people that you think you need to watch out for end up being the open it and keep it type of folks. It was a fun round, with ornament stealing abound. I ended up with the most beautiful glass Angel ornament, which was brought by Sara. I stole it from my friend Debbie, with optimism that if it ended up being mine, it would survive the season being hung on a Christmas tree with three kids under the age of 5 in the household. I must have had too much to drink, because today I'm not feeling nearly as optimistic. I love this ornament and really don't want it to be broken. I've decided that the safest route will be to display it prominently in our China Cabinet, with our other "fragiles" as Kelly likes to say. Our hostess, Charlene, gave us each a gift that I thought I'd share with you. It is especially meaningful this time of year when life gets hectic and things tend to spin out of control. I'll leave you with this: Let Your God Love You by Edwina … [Continue reading]

Cinnamon Sugar Cookies

While browsing the enormous Food Blog world this week, I happened upon a great blog with several great recipes and product recommendations. I finally had to stop reading through past posts because my list of recipes I wanted to try kept getting longer and longer! The site is Nosh with Me and it's managed by Hilary, a passionate baker and a very entertaining writer. Hilary recently posted a recipe for Cinnamon Sugar Cookies. Reading her description I could practically taste these yummy creations, as well as envision the aroma swarming through my house. I knew I had to give them a try. So, yesterday, my 4 year old and my 3 year old were my big helpers in the kitchen as we made these cookies. Warning to mom's out there wanting to try this recipe with little helpers in the kitchen. The Sugar in the Raw is something my kids couldn't keep their hands out of. They loved rolling the balls in the sugar, as well as piling the sugar up, spilling it all over the place, running their fingers through the large crystals. They had a ball, which is what counts, right? The end result of this recipe is a cookie with a very unique flavor. I can't quite put my finger on what that flavor is, but I can tell you... they are delicious! They seem like the perfect thing to pair with a hot cup of cocoa. They are slightly chewy, with a perfectly crisp outside.  The only change I made to the recipe was to only bake them for 10 minutes. If you are selling your house and are looking for that cookie … [Continue reading]

Mommy Brain

After searching and searching all morning for my camera, I just found my camera in the refrigerator and the cream cheese where I keep the camera, up by my desk. It's official... I'm losing it! My friends call this "Mommy Brain" which is connected to losing brain cells after you have children. Sure... I'll say that is my excuse. Sounds like a good one, and one that hopefully won't require any serious medical intervention. Professionals say that "Children challenge parent's mental resources." Really?? Who would have guessed that <insert heavy sarcasm>. I would say that's a very polite way of saying that once you have children, your mind goes to mush. You might as well welcome and embrace the phenomenon known as "Mommy Brain". Does this mean when my kids are grown and out of the house I'll return to my previous smart, witty, put together self?  Will I still find my bread in the clothes dryer and my clothes in the oven? Will I continue to be mindless and forgetful without a diagnosed medical excuse? Will I ever be able to remember the name of all 50 states in alphabetical order again? I guess only time will tell. In the meantime, I'll find the nearest "Mommy Brain" support group where I'll hopefully feel accepted by more people just like me.   … [Continue reading]

Pumpkin Pie Dip

The first official Christmas party that I will be attending is tonight. We were asked to bring an ornament for the ornament exchange and an appetizer. I decided to go with something sweet instead of an appetizer. I mean, it's all women... I know how women love their desserts! This recipe is from Recipezaar. I was going to follow this other recipe, but our stores don't carry anything called canned Pumpkin Pie Filling. We have canned pumpkin and we have Pumpkin Pie Mix in a can (you have to add eggs and evaporated milk) but nothing called canned Pumpkin Pie Filling. Is there really such a thing?? Here's the recipe I used: Pumpkin Pie Dip Recipe #198778 A sweet dip to use with gingersnaps, pears or apples. by Chemaine 3 cups of dip 10 min 10 min prep 8 ounces cream cheese, softened 2 cups confectioners' sugar 15 ounces canned pumpkin 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger Beat cream cheese and sugar at medium speed of an electric mixer until smooth. Add Pumpkin, cinnamon, and ginger, beating well. Cover and chill up to 5 days.     … [Continue reading]

Confession: I’m in love with the UPS man

Why does the UPS man always come during nap time? Why does he always have to be all crazy and ring the doorbell multiple times like a toddler with a new toy? Surely he knows that it's naptime for the kiddo's in suburbia. Is he trying to disturb their peaceful slumbers on purpose, which in turn ruins Mommy's precious moments of quiet? Do you know why he can get away with it? Do you know why I choose to forgive him, time after time? Because the guy in brown is always bearing goodies of some sort. Yes... I know he didn't buy me anything. I know he isn't out spending his hard earned cash on things for me, however, he is the one to bring me my anxiously anticipated items that I've purchased online. He is the one who delivers all of my presents... the gifts that are typically presents to me. As a mom of three kids who doesn't dare go to the mall without an army of adults in tow, online shopping is my haven. The UPS man delivering the goods is just about as lovely as having your very own cabana boy bringing you umbrella drinks on a sunny day by the pool (and since I'm fantasizing, I might as well throw in that I'm wearing a gorgeous swimsuit and don't have an ounce of cellulite or stretch marks to show). Yes - I am in love with the UPS man. My heart pitter patters when I hear the roar of the big brown truck heading down our street. Alas, I've digressed. The reason I originally came on here to post is that the UPS man just paid a visit. We went through our typical routine. He rang … [Continue reading]
