You all know I love the folks and the products from Quaker. Quaker was such a great part of my childhood… in fact, if I were to sit down and think back to an image or logo that was most regular in our home growing up, it would be the Quaker Oats guy. Whether it was a hot bowl of oatmeal in the morning, some homemade oatmeal cookies in the afternoon, or simply the Quaker Oats carton being used as a drum during playtime, Quaker has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember.
February is the month for love, and with Quaker that means starting with our hearts… as in heart healthy. February is American Heart Month and Quaker is celebrating by donating $1.00 to the American Heart Association for each current Facebook fan and every new person who “likes” the Quaker Facebook Page during the month of February (up to $250,000). The money donated by Quaker will benefit the AHA’s new program My Heart. My Life., which helps bring healthy cooking curriculum to after-school organizations across the country –> and you know I love that! Stop what you are doing right now and take two seconds to go and “like” Quaker on Facebook. Then come right back here… I’ve teamed up with Quaker for a heart healthy giveaway worth approximately $250!
How are you keeping your heart healthy?
Diet and exercise are integral to heart health and starting your morning off with a great heart healthy breakfast, like a bowl of hot Quaker oatmeal, can help your heart to keep on pumping for a long time to come. More importantly, when we set an example for our children about the importance of a healthy breakfast each morning (like my mom did for me when I was growing up) we help them to start taking care of their heart at an early age.
How about a heart healthy giveaway? My friends at Quaker want to share an Amazing Heart Kit with one lucky Dine & Dish reader! Included in this giveaway:
Quaker oatmeal bowl and products, a yoga mat, Dr. Nieca Goldberg’sComplete Guide to Women’s Health, Quaker Oats heart-healthy recipes and a heart rate monitor. (ARV: $250).

Curious about the muffins in these pictures? You should be! They are delicious Applesauce Oatmeal Muffins from the Quaker website. Just another great way to incorporate Quaker Oats into a great breakfast for your family.
Recipe: Applesauce Oatmeal Streusel Muffins (from Quaker.com)
Topping:
- 1/4 cup Quaker® Oats (quick or old fashioned, uncooked)
- 1 tablespoon firmly packed brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon margarine or butter, melted
- 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Muffins:
- 1-1/2 cups Quaker® Oats (quick or old fashioned, uncooked)
- 1-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
- 1/2 cup fat-free milk
- 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 egg white, lightly beaten
Heat oven to 400°F. Line twelve medium muffin cups with paper baking cups or spray bottoms only with cooking spray.
For topping, combine the first four ingredients — oats, brown sugar, butter and cinnamon — in small bowl; mix well. Set aside.
For muffins, combine oats, flour, baking powder, baking soda and cinnamon in large bowl; mix well. In medium bowl, combine applesauce, milk, sugar, oil and egg white; blend well. Add to dry ingredients all at once; stir just until dry ingredients are moistened. (Do not overmix.)
Fill muffin cups almost full. Sprinkle with reserved topping, patting gently.
Bake 20 to 22 minutes or until deep golden brown. Cool muffins in pan on wire rack 5 minutes. Remove from pan. Serve warm.

I’m exercising at least 4 times a week and trying to eat more fruits and veggies.
Quaker is still part of my breakfast every morning ! Love those muffins!
liked quaker on face book oatmeal is so good i eat it on a regular basis i make vegan oatmeal bread all the time.
My dad just moved in with us last week (after a terrible car accident). He has dentures that have NEVER fit correctly and he’s not very motivated to get them fixed — even with help. He usually drinks an “instant breakfast” each morning, but I actually got him to eat a bowl of oatmeal this morning — and he loved it.
So, I’m keeping him healthy along with our whole family.
Tweeted the required thing, but I don’t know how to link to my tweet. ???
Followed Quaker on Twitter
Friended Quaker on FaceBook.
I think I’m done commenting now!
My father had raging heart disease for 30 years. I take cardiac care very seriously – work out 6 day a week for an hour, eat whole grains (a lot of oatmeal, actually), fatty fish, fruits, veggies and legumes. I’m not perfect all the time and it’s still a struggle, but it is so important to me.
LIked Quaker on facebook – thanks for the giveaway opportunity!
Oats are very healthy and nutritious. these muffins look great.
EXCELLENT giveaway!!
I <3 Quaker oats, and those muffins look delish.
I try to be good to my heart with a diet heavy in plants, whole grains, and omega-3 goodness from fish oil and flax seed. Oh, and walking. I'm a walker, not a runner.
Walking with the dogs, no snacks at night!
Exercise. Exercise. Exercise. And, of course, eating more oats!
I like Quaker on face book thanks for the giveaways you have
consume more plant material than meat and moving more than i sit – both of which i’m committed to do more of this year. and at the moment am also working on cutting back on the dairy products – one other tip that has helped: there are no ‘good foods, bad foods’ and being aware of what i’m putting in my mouth, savoring the meal and the time away from my desk and actually sitting at a table.
Thanks for the great giveaway — I liked Quaker on Facebook!
We’re keeping hearts healthy in our family with lots of hearty oatmeal and fresh fruits and veggies!
